Reflections on Creativity and Life

About Me
shari2

I’m Sharika Roland. I’m a Northwest artist who is fascinated by faces and people. I begin my works with a brush drawing of a face or human figure. Then I apply ink, paint and gel in various layers to create rich colors and textures. Along the way, my images are painted, scrubbed, rinsed off, then ink and paint are reapplied until the final image is finally revealed. The process of discovering who these girls will become keeps me intrigued and absorbed. It is as if I am getting to know the characters in a play or in real life situations. The process takes time, patience, and a willingness to trust that a person’s true nature will be revealed “when the time is right.”

Matisse’s paintings inspire me, as seen in his paintings of women in relaxed domestic settings. I think that many of my bold, glowing colors, as well as expressive, gestural line and form are reminiscent of Matisse.

My work can be seen in Seattle’s Art Studio District (Occidental Park) at Art Forte, as well as in my studio on 6th Avenue in Tacoma. My pieces are in private collections in Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, and Columbia, South Carolina.
