Tacoma is a small town to have an artist of the caliber of Melissa Weinman. I first saw her work in restaurant many years ago. I could not forget it. People swimming underwater. super realistic but dreamy at the same time.
It is very hard to put a contemporary feel of realism unless your subject matter is compelling and surprising. The high skill that she possesses do not get in the way of her vision. Her paintings draw me into the place that is at once dignified and visceral. Her saint paintings are dramatically human and accessible instead of otherworldly. Very touchable.
