The way to market anything is get people to talk about it. People are starving for something fresh all the time. When an idea is fresh we see it. It becomes a new thing to add to our idea base for what is possible. Saying anything is possible is ok but seeing something demonstrated is a million times more inspirational. When we see a new idea, we all have an ahha moment. It gives us hope that we too can expand beyond what we already think is possible. That is why the Soap Lake Lava Lamp is so important to do. It is the impossible realized and I know that on many levels people would be inspired to conquer their surroundings and step out into the realm of the impossible.
I believe it is important as an artist to constantly breakthrough to the next level. Doing the same old thing with the same old technique is very natural and it is very seductive to know somebody will probably buy the work if you do that. But there is another thing inside every artist to grow into a better artist. You only can get to the next level by going through uncharted territory. Who knows if people will buy the new thing. I think you have to be willing to fail pleasing others . That is easy to do when no one is buying your work but when they are selling then it is way harder. I think about what I would paint if I were in heaven. I would paint whatever I could think of with wild abandon. I would paint as if I was not the painter but only the observer. Total egoless art.
There are two types of people in this world. Those that say why and those who say why not. There are always a million reasons to not try something new. It is always more comfortable to stay put, even if where you are is totally uncomfortable. You can be in total agony and it is easier than doing something different.
I love it when people burn their safety bridges and strike out and either live or die. You work pretty hard to make something happen if you will die if you don’t make it.
I think of my gallery in Seattle, Artforte. The owner has made her mind up that she will not quit, no matter what. Lots of galleries have folded in Pioneer Square but she does not quit. She just works harder and harder. She will survive and flourish because all this recession has done is honed her skills to survive. She will laugh if things get hard because she knows what to do. She has courage and I am so proud of her. Her partner is God and she knows all these rough times will work to her benefit later on.
It is so hard to describe Soap Lake to someone . It is a small town with just a short downtown area. There is hardly any shopping to be had there, Yet the arts seem to be thriving. They have a paid for remarkable theater where they do musicals and show films that have sold out shows time after time. The gallery is well attended and tons of artist are moving there. The energy is electric in this place and everybody loves it so much when they live there or buy a vacation place. It really is the best of both worlds. You get lots of things to do and a tremendous community to be with, while you get the open spaces and the vast sky to live in. Just as the water in the lake is unique, so is the town.
