For anything to be incredible in my book, it must posses certain qualities. I never thought of it before, I never even was close to thinking of it, and I could have thought of it given the right circumstances. First, if I don’t understand it, and it is nowhere on my radar, then it can be incredible to someone, but not to me. I have to be able to really understand it.
Art is like that for everyone. It has to speak to you in a way that you get or you will not even appreciate it a little. To go to the level of understanding new things you have to first realize that you have the ability to understand anything and make some kind of effort. The effort is always always always worth it. The more things you understand the more you can understand, so that is why it is good to go outside of your comfort zone.
Take art again for an example. You might only like realistic paintings and abhor abstracts. If that is the case you should study abstract painting and make a concerted effort to see a lot of it. Soon you would get it. Let me tell you about abstracts. they are not just paint thrown on. They are complex studies of space and time. Helen Frankenthaler did wonderful girl abstracts which are very different from say Mark Rothko. Her paintings are full of female energy and studies of color and expanses of space. To me her paintings are rife with joy and vistas of deep contemplations. They are like looking at the sky that keeps changing. They make you feel like you are flying through the clouds. On the other hand Rothko work is here on earth. He looks at the horizon over and over and does not look up. There is plenty to see looking straight ahead too.
